There are a few plays on words in Utah that just make me smile. While I might not partake in the adult beverages that play on religious sayings, i.e. polygamy porter, I had heard of the Tavernacle’s dueling pianos. There are plenty of Tabernacles in Utah, that are religious buildings — but only one Tavernacle.
Our effort was minimal here. I’d vaguely heard of it, and then it popped up as having four stars on Yelp and a friend recommended it as a place to spend New Year’s Eve. It’s a bar — though online, it’s referred to as a social club? It doesn’t seem very clubby (I’m vaguely thinking that this has something to do with Utah’s alcohol laws?). Bottom line, we wanted to get out of the house and away from Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin, but not pay a ton of money. Next year I want to pull out all the stops and do a 5-course meal with dinner and dancing. Though, keep in mind, I say that every year.
A 15-minute drive to live entertainment with a $10 cover was fun. I didn’t dance on the stage by any means, but it provided quality moments to watch those who did. We sang a long — and I was totally impressed at how many songs the husband knew. He even danced. At midnight they passed out noisemakers and hats and we kissed as balloons fell from the ceiling. What’s not to love?
The bar tender did laugh at me when I ordered Pelegrino. I think I was one step away from a Coyote Ugly moment where they call out the guy that orders water. Oopsies. If I’m welcomed back, I’d be all about returning to karaoke on Tuesday nights. Oh – and next time, we’ll get a reservation for a table so we’re not standing.
See those balloons? They were all over the ceiling. At midnight they pulled the string and they rained down.

I think Utah requires weird licensing when there are bars involved and I have heard that the licenses are hard to acquire. I once heard a rumor that the school purchased all of the liquor licenses in Rexburg…who knows if that is true.
Happy New Year!
Also who does your graphic design? My blog needs a revamp and I have no idea where to begin or where to go.
I love your blog design. It was Nicole Bateman of pixel design studio. There are polka dots but somehow I managed to delete them!
I’ve always wanted to see the dueling pianists!
Let’s go! It was fun! They were crazy…
I was listening to a podcast on Utah’s liquor laws, and whether or not religion plays a role. It was fascinating to me, the whole private club/cover charge thing. If you get a chance, look it up on Utah Public Radio- Radiowest.
Glad you had a great time! Next time get a coke!
Yeah, you need a class to know what’s what. I went with a cran-sprite but I think coke would up my coolness.
Just shrug, smile and say “DD” and they won’t care.
